Digital skills are vital for the economy – now and in the future. It’s estimated that over a million digitally skilled people will be needed by 2022.

Improving the quality and supply of digital skills will ensure that the UK economy has access to a world-class skills pipeline, which is an important aim of the government’s Industrial and Digital Strategies. 

Developing the next generation of digital talent

The government has invested £20 million to set up an Institute of Coding (IoC) which is a consortium of universities and employers, to develop the next generation of digital talent at degree level and above.

This will develop higher-level digital skills capabilities among those already in work as well as improve graduate employability.

Students attending the institute will benefit from courses that meet industry needs and be able to access high quality work experience opportunities.

The institute aims to:

• develop specialist skills training in areas of strategic importance
• boost equality and diversity in technology-related education and careers (e.g. tailored workshops, boot-camps, innovative learning facilities and other outreach activities)
• produce research, analysis and intelligence to anticipate future skills gaps.

The Office for Students (OfS) monitors the IoC to ensure it is delivering on its objectives and achieving what it was established to do. Staff at OfS are members of the IoC’s governance board.

The Institute will complement other government initiatives including Ada National College for Digital Skills and the New Model in Technology and Education (NMITE).
