Explore the Office for Students

We are the independent regulator of higher education in England.

We aim to ensure that every student, whatever their background, has a fulfilling experience of higher education that enriches their lives and careers.

Our work covers all students whether undergraduate or postgraduate, home or international, young or mature, full-time or part-time, studying on a campus or by distance learning.

Our board is chaired by James Wharton, and our interim chief executive is Susan Lapworth. We are advised by a panel of current and prospective students, and recent graduates.

What do we want to achieve?

We want to ensure that:

  • students from all backgrounds are able to enter and succeed in higher education. Students should be able to make informed choices about their studies, with access to a diverse range of provision which meets their needs.
  • students have access to high quality teaching and learning – whatever, wherever and however they are studying.
  • students’ interests are protected, and that they receive value for money.
  • students are well prepared for life after graduation, gaining qualifications which offer rewarding opportunities for postgraduate study or employment, aligned with the needs of employers.

I really enjoy working for an organisation that is ambitious in its approach to equality and diversity. Alongside my day job, I’ve also had the opportunity to be part of a team leading the development of the OfS’ emerging approach to building an inclusive culture. There’s always more to be done, but I’m excited for the future.
