Medical and dental intakes

We publish data on the numbers of students joining medical and dental higher education courses across the UK.

Below are the figures for the academic year 2023-24 and the initial intake figures for the academic year 2024-25.

The data is collected through an annual survey which we run on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS England, the Scottish Funding Council, Medr (Commission for Tertiary Education and Research for Wales) and the Department for the Economy (Northern Ireland).

Summary

Confirmed total intake of medical and dental students at UK medical and dental schools during the academic year 2023-24:

Medical intake 10,203
Dental intake 1,115

Initial intake of medical and dental students at UK medical and dental schools during the academic year 2024-25:

Medical intake 10,417
Dental intake 1,109

The data is used for funding and workforce planning purposes. For universities and colleges in England, the OfS reviews the data against medical and dental maximum fundable limits to inform funding allocations.
