Support for disadvantaged students
Universities and colleges will often consider the personal circumstances and background of students.
Who is disadvantaged?
The following factors can often place students at a disadvantage:
- being the first in your family to go to university
- coming from a disadvantaged socio-economic group
- going to school that has a low rate of pupils who progress to university
- living in an area with low levels of participation in higher education
- having spent time in care
- being a refugee
- having a criminal conviction.
Universities and colleges run their own programmes of support for students from these backgrounds.
