Review of the selection and grouping of benchmarking factors
Our ‘Review of the selection and grouping of benchmarking factors’ includes analysis of the relationships between a range of candidate benchmarking factors and different student outcomes and experiences in higher education in England. It also provides data relevant to understanding the statistical integrity of the benchmarking method.
This document was published as supporting information alongside our consultation on constructing student outcome and experience indicators for use in OfS regulation (now closed), to aid understanding the evidence that has informed our selection and grouping of benchmarking factors.

Updated modelling results
Published September 2022
The following data workbooks contain the full results of the statistical modelling produced following the outcomes of the data indicators consultation. This modelling has been used to inform our final decision making on the selection and grouping of benchmarking factors which is described in our consultation outcomes addendum.
For all full-time and part-time measures, we have produced updated versions of the shortlist modelling outputs available above in the original workbooks. These models make use of updated data and definitions following the consultation and align with the TEF and student outcomes indicators we have published. The full-time and part-time workbooks also contain models with only the proposed benchmarking factors. Additionally, the full-time progression workbook contains the outputs of bespoke models for the other undergraduate and undergraduate with postgraduate components levels of study.
For apprenticeship measures, small populations have meant that we were not able to produce model outputs during the initial review. With the benefit of a new year of data we have now produced models for apprenticeship provision. These models are limited to only the proposed benchmarking factors and the small populations involved still limit our ability to identify significant differences between groups in some cases.
