Student guide to evidence collection
This guide is intended to support student representatives to collect high quality evidence about the student experience and student outcomes at their institution.
It draws on the experience of preparing and assessing student submissions for the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and was produced by some former TEF panel members, including students.
It includes tips and advice for collecting evidence that could be useful in representing students at your university or college as well as informing future student submissions.

Why have we created this guide?
In the 2023 TEF exercise, student representatives were invited to submit student views to inform the assessments.
Afterwards, we asked these representatives about their experience of preparing the student submissions. They told us that:
- it was difficult to gather evidence that covered the full TEF assessment period retrospectively
- they would value more support in understanding what evidence they should be trying to collect and what good evidence looks like.
We commissioned the guide in response to this feedback. It explains why it's important for student representatives to start thinking about and collecting evidence for future assessments now, and provides ideas for how to approach evidence collection.
We expect to invite student submissions as part of the future integrated approach to quality assessment that we are developing. You can read more about this in our draft future strategy for 2025-30.
